Making a Brick

STEP 1
New Image > Size quite bigger than we will need because we will be cropping later. For this tutorial, we'll start at about 500x400, and a Transparent Background.

STEP2
Select the Bricks tube, and in straight horizontal strokes, build your first row of bricks. You may need to use that undo button a few times until you get it looking right.

STEP 3
Add 2 more rows of bricks over this one, with bricks offset (the way bricks are normally laid). Don't try to get it perfect. And use your undo button if the bricks overlap too much, or are spaced to far apart, etc.

STEP 4
Once you have about 3 layers of bricks, rather than continuing up to the top, just copy (Edit > Copy) and paste (Edit > Paste > As New Selection) and position over the first three rows of bricks. By offsetting the bricks, you'll have an empty area on the side, but we can crop that off in a bit.

STEP 5
Keep pasting until you get to the top of the image.

STEP 6
Deselect all (Selections > Select None). Now crop the blank portions out.

STEP 7
Select All (Selections > Select All) and then click anywhere on the image with one of the selection tools (like the magic wand). Your bricks will now be selected. Invert your selection so that the area where the mortar will be is selected.

STEP 8
Fill your selection with a light to medium gray.

STEP 9
Floodfill again, this time in black and with the Lava paper texture.

STEP 10
Image > Effects > Outer Bevel, select the jo_mortar preset, and click OK.
Deselect all and you're done with your wall!

Now, if you want to make it look like it's got a big opening,
don't merge your layers, and keep going.....

STEP 11
Use your freehand selection tool, and freehand select the opening in your wall, hit delete, then deselect all. You may have to erase a little at the bottom that didn't get selected. If so, pick your eraser tool (make sure you don't have a paper texture selected), and just go across the bottom and erase anything that didn't get selected.

STEP 12
Duplicate your layer (Layers > Duplicate) and in the Layers dialog box, move the Copy of Layer1 underneath Layer1.

STEP 13
With the copied layer active, Select All (Selections > Select All), and click anywhere in the image with one of the selection tools. Now move this lower copy of your bricks about 8 or 9 pixels to the left and about 4 or 5 pixels down.

STEP 14
Deselect all. Now, with your lower layer still active, Adjust the brightness and contrast (Colors > Adjust > Brightness/Contrast) to Brightness -50, Contrast 0. There you go! Deselect all and you've just put a big crack in your wall!

Now, if you want to add something behind it, *peeking* through, just merge these two layers (Layers > Merge > Merge Visible), and add a layer (or as many as you need) *under* this merged layer for what's BEYOND THE WALL!
