Charles Haertling Architect
Charles A.Haertling rather represents an unusual figure in the panorama of the organic architecture of last century.
Despite has never belonged to the entourage of the architects in contact with the masters of that kind of architecture - F.L.Wright, Bruce Goff e.c.c. - in his
brief professional life has developed an original approach to the organic organization of the building space, worthy of the best examples of organic
architecture of the time.
Haertling was born in Ste. Genevieve, Missouri, in 1928. He began his own architectural practice in 1957 that lasted 25 years, and designed over 40
buildings, most of them residential.
In all of his work he considered the design challenge as a trust and beauty, as a human need and not a luxury. This follows from the organic architecture
principle of enrichment, in which more is better. This is expressed in a care for controlled detail, striving for ideals of space, form, functionality and
timelessness.
Haertling developed this statement to describe his method: "The design process is one of painful exhilaration in human endeavor where one gives
ultimate importance to the problem to being solved, letting the problem itself be an integrated solution which uses materials and structure void of
distortion of uses untrue to the nature of the material or process, testing the boundaries of the application so as to give excitement, variety, adventure and
human relation to the project."
Each commission Haertling received involved in-depth interviews with the client to determine their particular needs. The personality of the client factored
in greatly in the final resulting design. Even the children in families had their input in the process. And it was not uncommon that Haertling would have to
tell a client to find another architect in the case that the chemistry was not right.
Charles A.Haertling is death at 55 years of age in 1984.

FOREWORD
Codes and regulations for the design of steel structures in Hong Kong were initially derived from the
London Byelaws and then BS 449. In 1987 Hong Kong published its own code based on the
permissible stress design for the use of structural steel. In recognition of the stated aim of The
Government of The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region to develop a technology driven and
knowledge based society, the Hong Kong Buildings Department commissioned a Consultancy Study
to carry out reviews of structural steel design practice in Hong Kong and overseas and to draft a new
limit state code for the Structural Use of Steel using Limit State Approach.
The study was carried out by a joint venture consultancy formed from The Hong Kong Polytechnic
University and Ove Arup & Partners Hong Kong Limited.
The code is intended to encourage the use of structural steel to the benefit of stakeholders, the
environment and the society. It offers the potential of wider use in the region.
The code has been developed using worldwide best practice and philosophy from international codes.
Particular guidance has been introduced to the Code to cover high rise building design, composite
design, long span structures, stability issues, temporary works in construction, a wide range of steel
grades, performance based design and structural vibration. The code is intended to be easy for use
by practicing engineers.
Use of materials is covered by reference to internationally accepted equivalent standards and by
clarifying procedures for demonstrating compliance of materials which fall outside these standards.
The Code contains clauses on materials and workmanship for fabrication and erection.

Structural Design Guide is a unique and comprehensive tool for design professionals, particularly structural engineers, seeking to provide value-added
services to the producers and consumers of American housing. As such, the guide is organized around the following major objectives:
* to present a sound perspective on American housing relative to its history, construction characteristics, regulation, and performance experience;
* to provide the latest technical knowledge and engineering approaches for the design of homes to complement current code-prescribed design methods;
* to assemble relevant design data and methods in a single, comprehensive format that is instructional and simple to apply for the complete design of a
home; and
* to reveal areas where gaps in existing research, design specifications, and analytic tools necessitate alternative methods of design and sound
engineering judgment to produce efficient designs.
This guide consists of seven chapters. The layout and application of the various chapters are illustrated in the figure on page vii. Chapter 1 describes the
basic substance of American housing, including conventional construction practices, alternative materials, building codes and standards, the role of
design professionals, and actual experience with respect to performance problems and successes, particularly as related to natural hazards such as
hurricanes and earthquakes. Chapter 2 introduces basic engineering concepts regarding safety, load path, and the structural system response of
residential buildings, subassemblies, and components to various types of loads. Chapter 3 addresses design loads applicable to residential construction.
Chapters 4 and 5 provide step-by-step design procedures for the various components and assemblies comprising the structure of a home—from the
foundation to the roof. Chapter 6 is devoted to the design of light-frame homes to resist lateral loads from wind and earthquakes. Chapter 7 addresses the
design of various types of connections in a wood-framed home that are important to the overall function of the numerous component parts. As
appropriate, the guide offers additional resources and references on the topics addressed.
Given that most homes in the United States are built with wood structural materials, the guide focuses on appropriate methods of design associated with
wood for the above-grade portion of the structure. Concrete or masonry are generally assumed to be used for the below-grade portion of the structure,
although preservative-treated wood may also be used. Other materials and systems using various innovative approaches are considered in abbreviated
form as appropriate. In some cases, innovative materials or systems can be used to address specific issues in the design and performance of homes. For
example, steel framing is popular in Hawaii partly because of wood’s special vi Residential Structural Design Guide problems with decay and termite
damage. Likewise, partially reinforced masonry construction is used extensively in Florida because of its demonstrated ability to perform in high winds.
For typical wood-framed homes, the primary markets for engineering services lie in special load conditions, such as girder design for a custom house;
corrective measures, such as repair of a damaged roof truss or floor joist; and high-hazard conditions such as on the West Coast (earthquakes) and the Gulf
and Atlantic coasts (hurricanes). The design recommendations in the guide are based on the best information available to the authors for the safe and
efficient design of homes. Much of the technical information and guidance is supplemental to building codes, standards, and design specifications that
define current engineering practice. In fact, current building codes may not explicitly recognize some of the technical information or design methods
described or recommended in the guide. Therefore, a competent professional designer should first compare and understand any differences between the
******* of this guide and local building code requirements. Any actual use of this guide by a competent professional may require appropriate
substantiation as an "alternative method of analysis." The guide and references provided herein should help furnish the necessary documentation.
The use of alternative means and methods of design should not be taken lightly or without first carefully considering the wide range of implications
related to the applicable building code’s minimum requirements for structural design, the local process of accepting alternative designs, the acceptability
of the proposed alternative design method or data, and exposure to liability when attempting something new or innovative, even when carried out
correctly. It is not the intent of this guide to steer a designer unwittingly into non-compliance with current regulatory requirements for the practice of
design as governed by local building codes. Instead, the intent is to provide technical insights into and approaches to home design that have not been
compiled elsewhere but deserve recognition and consideration. The guide is also intended to be instructional in a manner relevant to the current state of
the art of home design.
Finally, it is hoped that this guide will foster a better understanding among engineers, architects, building code officials, and home builders by clarifying

has also been extended to include information on the technologies involved In vacuum drainage and syphonic rainwater disposal systems.
The piped gases section has undergone a major review and the section on steam now includes condensate recovery information.
Information on the design and installation of residential sprinkler systems is included for Itie first time, along with completely new sections on resource
efficient design and swimming pools.

Plumbing pipes, like all building materials, eventually wear out and have to be replaced. If you find yourself repairing leaky, corroded pipes every few
months, it may be time to consider replacing the old system entirely—and soon. A corroded water pipe that bursts while you are away can cost you many
thousands of dollars
in damage to wall surfaces, framing members, and furnishings. Identifying the materials used in your plumbing
system can also tell you if replacement is advised.
If you have galvanized steel pipes, for example, it is a good bet that they will need to be replaced in the near future. Most galvanized steel pipes were
installed before 1960, and since steel pipes have a maximum life expectancy of 30 to 35 years, such a system is probably living on borrowed time. On the
other hand, if your
system includes copper supply pipes and plastic drain pipes, you can relax; these materials were likely installed within the last 40 years, and they are
considerably more durable than steel, provided they were installed correctly.

"Richard Meier (born October 12, 1934 in Newark, New Jersey) is a late twentieth century American architect known for his use of the color white. He
achieved a Bachelor of Architecture degree from Cornell University in 1957, worked for SOM (Skidmore, Owings and Merrill) briefly in 1959, then for
Marcel Breuer for three years before starting his own practice in 1963. Identified as one of The New York Five in 1972, his commission of the Getty
Museum in Los Angeles, California catapulted his popularity.
In 1984, Meier was awarded the Pritzker Prize. He also consulted on the design of several buildings that appear in the 2003 city building computer game
SimCity 4, making him perhaps the first professional architect ever commissioned to participate in building design for a computer game."
